Do I need an FEI passport?

Maybe the CCI1* level has inspired you to aim for an international class this season, or you have a big FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) event in your sights, but no matter what your international ambitions, making sure you have the correct paperwork should be high up on your priority list. Here’s a quick checklist of what you’ll need to go international this year:

Do I need an FEI passport?

There are two instances where your horse will need an FEI passport cover to compete in international events:

  • To compete at CCI4*-S or above in the UK
  • To compete in any international competition outside of the UK

The earliest an FEI passport can be revalidated is two months before the expiry date on the passport. If you need any help on FEI passports, please contact the BE Membership Team on 02476 698857.

Don’t forget your FEI registration!

Your horse only needs an FEI passport for the two reasons stated above, however, no matter what level or where, both you and your horse will need to be registered with the FEI to compete in an international class.

The FEI require all horses and riders to have an annual registration before they can compete at any international level.

Registrations are valid from January to December and cost £17 per horse and £17 per rider and, once registered, FEI numbers will need to be entered on your entry forms.

Horse and Rider application forms need to be sent into the BE office on For FEI renewals please contact 02476 698856.

How long do FEI registrations take?

FEI registrations and renewals can take up to 10 days to process in busy periods, however there is a fast track option available at an extra fee of £20.
